NATIONAL WORKSHOPS FOR THE CONSERVATION OF THE LESSER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE [1]

In parallel to the coordination of international conservation measures for the Lesser White-fronted Goose between the 22 range states covered by the AEWA International Single Species Action Plan, the UNEP/AEWA Secretariat can provide - funding permitting - the facilitation of national workshops for the species in key countries.

The aim of these workshops is to bring together all relevant national stakeholders from government officials to National Park management authorities, hunting organizations, scientists and NGOs to discuss and decide on national conservation measures for the species. National work on the Lesser White-fronted Goose should ideally be led by the representatives designated to the International Working Group. The Secretariat encourages International Working Group Members to take the lead in establishing National Working Groups for organizing implementation nationally.

The ultimate goal of such national workshops is to identify the key threats in each country and to discuss possible solutions with the aim of drafting and adopting a National Action Plan [2] for the species.

To date the UNEP/AEWA Secretariat has organized such workshops in Kazakhstan (October 2010) and Azerbaijan (May 2011) with workshops planned to be organized in Iran, Hungary, Greece and Bulgaria in the near future.
